SelfTrack

FAQ and troubleshooting

Setup

The tracking status says "Waiting"

You've agreed in the app, but Android's switch for "SelfTrack interaction tracking" isn't on yet. Switch on just that one in Settings > Accessibility > Installed apps. If it's greyed out, open SelfTrack's app info, tap the three-dot menu and choose "Allow restricted settings".

Is this a research study? Does anyone see my data?

No. SelfTrack is a personal self-tracking tool. It has no internet permission, so it cannot send your data anywhere, and we never receive, store or analyze it. Nothing is collected unless you choose to export a file and share it yourself.

Do I need an account?

No. SelfTrack has no accounts and no sign-in.

Does it work on iPhone?

No, Android only, version 8.0 or newer.

Why did recording stop?

Some phones stop background apps to save battery. Set SelfTrack to Unrestricted in your battery settings and avoid force-stopping the app. Then tap Start monitoring service on the Data Collection tab. The "Last recorded" line on that tab tells you when it last worked.

Why can't I do a check-in right now?

After each check-in the form locks for 30 minutes so your answers stay meaningful. The message above the sliders says when it unlocks.

Your data

Where is my data stored?

Only on your phone. SelfTrack has no internet access. Data leaves your phone only if you export it and share the file yourself.

How do I stop or remove my data?

Tap Stop monitoring service, use Pause or Withdraw consent for the interaction tracking, and use Delete all data on the Data management tab. Files you already exported stay wherever you saved them, so delete those yourself. Uninstalling the app also removes its data.

What does SelfTrack never record?

The words you type, passwords, messages, notification contents, what is on your screen, or your location. See how it works.

Charts and results

Why are my charts empty?

They fill in after your first check-ins. Also check that Usage access says granted and that monitoring has been started.

How many check-ins do I need?

There's no magic number, but 20 to 30 is a rough minimum before a pattern means much, and it helps if your social media time varies from check-in to check-in.

Does this prove social media affects my mood?

No. It only shows whether the two tend to move together in your own check-ins. Low mood can change how you use your phone just as much as the other way around, and sleep, the day of the week and much more aren't included.

What do N, R² and p mean?

N is how many check-ins are in the plot. R² is the share of the ups and downs in your score that the line accounts for (0 means none, 1 means all of it). p asks how often a pattern this strong would show up by pure chance if there were no real link. Below 0.05 is the usual bar for "probably not chance".

Why are so many dots stacked at zero?

Each dot is one check-in, placed by how many minutes of social media you used in the hour before it. Check-ins with no social media in that hour all sit at zero.

Is this a diagnosis?

No. The questions are informal and adapted from the PHQ-2 and GAD-2 screeners, and the plots are for your own reflection. If you are struggling, please talk to a healthcare professional. In the US you can call or text 988.
